Labour fail to appoint any Darwen Councillors to Executive positions

Liberal Democrats have criticised the ruling Labour Group on Blackburn with Darwen Council for failing to appoint any of their Darwen Labour Councillors to Executive positions. The Executive makes most of the important decisions affected the borough and many of the decisions are made solely by an individual Executive Member (Portfolio Holder). Lib Dems defend their right to criticise the Labour Council

Blackburn with Darwen's Annual Council Meeting saw the Labour Leader of the Council, Cllr Khan, attack the opposition for negative campaigning in the recent local elections. Responding to the attack the Liberal Democrat Leader, Cllr David Foster, said,"As an opposition we will continue to criticise when you've got things wrong, we will continue to scrutinise very carefully your actions and we will support when we agree. If Cllr Khan thinks this is "running down" the town then he does not understand the role of an opposition in the Council."

Road in Darwen being resurfaced at last

Lib Dem Councillors in the Whitehall Ward are delighted that the entrance to the Jack's Key Estate is being repaired and resurfaced at last. Cllr Karimeh Foster said, we and local residents have been campaigning for this for over a year as the road had deteriorated a lot, we are pleased that at last the work is being done.

Lib Dems highlight problem with proposed new road

Former Lib Dem Councillor Simon Huggill has highlighted a problem with a proposed road to relieve traffic caused by new housing developments in the east of Darwen. Simon explained that part of the proposed road went over an areaclassified by the Coal Authority as "Development High Risk Area:there is significant potential for shallow mining-related hazards in terms of shafts, shallow workings and spoil tips" He wants to whole issue debated in public and not behind closed doors by the Council's Executive.
