Tax Credit Chaos Still Failing Local Families

Councillor David Foster, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Blackburn with Darwen Council has today called for a total overhaul of the way tax credits are awarded after new figures revealed that over 6,000 local families in Blackburn and Darwen are still being forced to payback over £5 million worth of tax credits, due to overpayments made by HM Revenue and Customs. He also revealed that over 3,000 families were being underpaid by a total of £1.7 million

Blackburn with Darwen Liberal Democrats elected Cllr. David Foster as their new Group Leader for 2006/7. Cllr. Foster paid tribute to Cllr. Paul Browne who had been Leader for over 20 years and commented on how the Party had grown from 2 seats to 13 under his leadership.

Lib Dems make gains in Blackburn

Liberal Democrats in Blackburn made a net gain of 2 seats from Labour in the Local Elections on May 5. This increased their representation on Blackburn with Darwen Council to 13. Lib Dems gained Audley, Bastwell and Shear Brow from Labour, but lost one seat, Little Harwood to Labour. They cam close to gaining another seat in the Sudell Ward in Darwen, Tony Melia failing to gain the seat by only 12 votes.
