The Liberal Democrats made substantial progress in the European Elections in the North West on June 10th. Chris Davies was re-elected as a MEP and he was joined by Sajjad Karim as the Liberal Democrats gained an extra seat.

Sajjad Karim was born in Blackburn. The votes cast in the European Elections in Blackburn & Darwen showed that the Liberal Democrats pushed the Conservatives into third place. There was evidence that there was confusion among some voters and they voted "Liberal" when they meant to vote Liberal Democrat. If those votes are added together we would overtake Labour.

The votes for Blackburn with Darwen were:

Labour .........................12,030

Liberal Democrats..........10,577

Conservatives.................10,190

UKIP.............................. 4,776

BNP............................... 4,491

Liberal............................ 2,097

Turnout........................... 50%
