Labour Mayor fails to uphold Council Policy

2 May 2009

On Thursday night the Labour Mayor Cllr Khan had to use his casting vote, because the votes were tied in a debate.

The policy accepted by the Council and introduced by the previous Labour administration was that the Mayor should use his casting vote in favour of the ruling group. On Thursday he failed to do so.

Liberal Democrat Leader, Cllr David Foster said, " I have never before publicly criticised a Mayor of this Borough, but Thursday saw a Mayor of this Borough use his casting vote for party political reasons. The Mayor during his year of office should be above party politics, unfortunately this Mayor failed to follow the rules and undermined the office of Mayor."
