Labour decide to demolish Darwen's 3 day market before consulting

8 Apr 2016

Blackburn with darwen's Labour Council has made the decision to close and demolish the 3 day market without any consultation with local people. They will only consult on the future of the site after demolition.

The issue was discussed at Darwen Town Council but all the Labour councillors (who are also Borough Councillors) supported demolition. They refused a request fro the Lib Dem Councillors asking that consultation be widened to include options to retain the building and look at possible alternatives.

Town Councillor Simon Huggill siad,"The Council have not looked at any alternatives. Could the market be run better by a commercial company, by a not for profit organisation etc. It show a complete lack of imagination."

Lib Dem Leader on Darwen Town Council, Roy Davies added,"It shows that Labour councillors on the Town Council are not prepared to stand against their bosses at Blackburn. We need councillors who prepared to stand up for Darwen."
