19 May 2010

The first Liberal Democrat MP from East Lancashire took his seat in Parliament on Tuesday. Gordon Birtwistle gained the Burnley seat from Labour after decades of Labour dominance in Burnley at both local and national level. Burnley now has a Liberal Democrat Council and a Liberal Democrat MP.

Congratulating Gordon, Lib Dem Leader on Blackburn with Darwen Council, David Foster said, "For too long East Lancs has been dominated by 2 parties in Parliament, it now reflects the fact that the country is in a new era with the Liberal Democrats playing a prominent part in both our local and national politics."
