Darwen Labour MP tops expenses list

14 Feb 2007

Rossendale & Darwen Labour MP Janet Anderson has topped the list of MP claiming travel expenses for their car.

In figures revealed by Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker he found that she £16,612 for her car mileage. This means she travelled over 60,000 miles on official business. This works out at 1,162 miles per week or 165 miles every day of the year. Local Liberal Democrats calculate that it would mean that she makes the round trip from London to Darwen in her car twice a week.

Local Liberal Democrat Leader, Councillor David Foster, said " While we appreciate that MPs have to travel a lot we question the amount of car miles being travelled. Does she need to travel over 1,000 miles a week in her car on official business? We would also question her use of a car - are there not greener forms of transport she could use - could she not use the trains?"
