Blackburn Council refuse to act on shocking accident statistics

15 May 2013

Labour run Blackburn with Darwen Council have yet again refused to agree to the introduction of 20 mph limits on our residential roads. Labour Councillors turned down yet another Lib Dem motion calling on them to act. This comes after they were found to be the worst area for road accidents to children in recently published report

Over a year ago the Lib Dems called for 20 mph limits on residential roads and it took nearly a year for the Executive Member to start to consider and experimental scheme. This is despite evidence and advice that 20 mph zones will improve the situation. Council across the country are adopting this including neighbouring Lancashire and Manchester.

At a recent Council meeting the Lib Dems called for an urgent report to be presented to the Council's decision making Executive Board, but Labour councillors voted this down and only agreed to a report to a Scrutiny committee, which has no powers to act.

Lib Dem Leader Cllr. David Foster said, "It is time the Council woke up to the seriousness of the situation and acted. They have had over a year to consider this but are still dragging their feet."
